Your fertile window is about 6 days each cycleEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed

Your fertile window is the handful of days each cycle when pregnancy is possible. Knowing when you ovulate — and timing intercourse in the days just before — gives you the best chance of conceiving. Here is how to find your fertile days, whether your cycle is regular or not.

What is ovulation?

Ovulation is when your ovary releases a mature egg. The egg survives for about 12–24 hours, while sperm can live inside the body for up to 5 days. That is why the fertile window spans roughly the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself — about 6 days in total.

How to calculate your fertile window

In a textbook 28-day cycle, ovulation happens around day 14 (counting day 1 as the first day of your period). The fertile window is then roughly days 9–15. To estimate your own:

Example: a 30-day cycle means ovulation around day 16 and a fertile window of about days 11–17.

Best days to try

Aim for intercourse every 1–2 days during the fertile window, especially the 2–3 days before ovulation — these are the highest-probability days. You do not need to wait for a positive OPK; regular intercourse across the window covers your bases.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you are under 35 and have not conceived after 12 months of trying, or after 6 months if you are 35 or older — or sooner if your cycles are very irregular, absent, or you have a known reproductive condition.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get pregnant outside my fertile window?

It is unlikely but not impossible, because sperm can survive several days and ovulation timing can shift. Intercourse well outside the window carries very low odds.

Are ovulation calculators accurate?

They give a good estimate for regular cycles but assume consistent timing. Tracking mucus, temperature or OPKs improves accuracy, especially with irregular cycles.

Does ovulation always happen on day 14?

No — day 14 is only average for a 28-day cycle. Your ovulation day depends on your own cycle length and can vary month to month.
