Hormones and iron slow the bowelEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed

Constipation is very common. Progesterone slows the bowel, iron supplements can worsen it, and the growing uterus presses on the intestines. Fibre, fluids and movement usually help.

Why it happens

Progesterone relaxes the bowel muscles, iron tablets can harden stools, and the growing uterus presses on the intestines.

How to relieve it

When to see a doctor

Get checked for severe pain, no bowel movement for several days with vomiting, or bleeding (which may be from straining or haemorrhoids).

Frequently asked questions

Can iron tablets cause constipation?

Yes — iron is a common cause. Your doctor can adjust the dose or formulation.

Are laxatives safe?

Some bulk-forming or gentle laxatives are used in pregnancy, but check with your doctor first.

How much fibre and water do I need?

Aim for plenty of fibre-rich foods and about 8–12 cups of fluids a day.
