Blood-pressure and blood-sugar changes are common causesEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Dizziness is common as your cardiovascular system adapts — blood pressure changes, blood pools when you stand, blood sugar dips, and the growing uterus can press on blood vessels. Occasional mild dizziness is usually normal.
Why it happens
- Lower blood pressure in early-mid pregnancy.
- Standing up quickly lets blood pool in your legs.
- Low blood sugar from not eating.
- Anaemia can contribute.
How to prevent it
- Stand up slowly.
- Eat regularly and stay hydrated.
- Avoid lying flat on your back later in pregnancy.
- Avoid overheating.
When to see a doctor
Seek care for fainting, or dizziness with a bad headache, vision changes, chest pain or bleeding — these can signal anaemia, low blood pressure or pre-eclampsia.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I feel faint when standing?
Blood pools in your legs and blood pressure dips; rising slowly helps.
Could dizziness mean anaemia?
Yes — anaemia is common in pregnancy and can cause dizziness. A blood test checks for it.
When is dizziness dangerous?
If you faint or have it with headache, vision changes or bleeding, get medical help.
