Usually morning sickness — but watch for dehydrationEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Vomiting in pregnancy is usually part of morning sickness from pregnancy hormones and is common in the first trimester. But frequent vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down may be hyperemesis gravidarum and needs treatment.
Why it happens
The same hormones that cause nausea — mainly hCG and oestrogen — can trigger vomiting, often worse on an empty stomach or with strong smells.
Managing it
- Sip fluids little and often to stay hydrated.
- Eat bland foods (toast, rice, bananas) when you can.
- Rest and avoid triggers.
- Ask about safe anti-nausea medicines if needed.
Warning signs — hyperemesis
Seek care for vomiting that prevents keeping any fluids down, weight loss, very dark or little urine, dizziness, or vomiting blood.
Frequently asked questions

What is hyperemesis gravidarum?
Severe pregnancy vomiting causing dehydration and weight loss; it needs medical treatment, sometimes IV fluids.
