Tender breasts are an early, hormone-driven signEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Sore, tender, swollen breasts are one of the earliest pregnancy signs, driven by rising oestrogen and progesterone preparing your body for breastfeeding. It usually eases after the first trimester.
Why it happens
Pregnancy hormones increase blood flow and stimulate milk-duct growth, making breasts feel fuller, heavier and tender. Nipples and areolas may also darken and become more sensitive.
How to ease it
- Wear a supportive or maternity bra, including a soft bra for sleep.
- Avoid pressure and tight clothing.
- Try a warm or cool compress.
What is normal vs not
Get checked for a persistent lump, one-sided redness, warmth or fever, which are not typical of normal pregnancy tenderness.
Frequently asked questions
When does breast tenderness start?
Often as early as 1–2 weeks after conception, sometimes before a missed period.
Will it last the whole pregnancy?
It usually eases after the first trimester, though breasts keep growing and may feel full.
Is one-sided pain normal?
Mild differences are normal, but a persistent one-sided lump, redness or fever should be checked.
