Lots of movement is usually a healthy signEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed

Lots of movement is usually a good sign of a healthy, active baby. Babies have active and quiet cycles, and are often more lively after you eat, drink something cold, or lie down to rest.

Why babies are active

Normal variation

Movement naturally comes in bursts and lulls as your baby sleeps and wakes. Feeling plenty of movement is reassuring.

When to mention it

Tell your doctor if you notice a sudden burst of very frantic movement followed by reduced or no movement — any change from your baby's normal pattern should be checked.

Frequently asked questions

Is lots of movement normal?

Yes, an active baby is usually a healthy sign.

Why is my baby more active at night?

Babies often become active when you rest in the evening, and you notice it more when still.

Can too much movement mean distress?

Rarely — a frantic burst followed by stillness should be checked, but plenty of normal movement is reassuring.
