Side-lying — ideally the left — from the second trimesterEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Sleeping on your side — ideally the left — from the second trimester onward is best, as it improves blood flow to your baby and your organs. A pillow between your knees and under your bump makes it more comfortable.
Why the side (and left)
Side-sleeping keeps the uterus off the large vein (the vena cava) that returns blood to your heart. The left side is often recommended for the best circulation, though either side is fine.
Make it comfortable
- Pillow between your knees.
- A small pillow under the bump.
- A pillow behind your back to stop rolling flat.
