About 8–12 cups (2–3 litres) of fluids a dayEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed

Aim for about 8–12 cups (2–3 litres) of fluids a day, more in hot weather, with exercise, or if you are vomiting. A good check: your urine should be pale straw-coloured, not dark. See our full hydration guide for more.

How much you need

Around 2–3 litres of fluids daily works for most. Water is best; milk and other drinks count, but limit sugary and caffeinated ones.

Why it matters

Good hydration supports your extra blood volume and amniotic fluid, and helps prevent constipation, urinary infections and headaches.
