High blood pressure plus organ signs after 20 weeks — urgentEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Pre-eclampsia is a serious condition of high blood pressure with signs of organ strain (often protein in the urine), usually after 20 weeks. It can develop quietly, so antenatal checks are vital — and certain warning signs need urgent care.
Warning signs
Seek care urgently for a severe headache, vision changes (blurring or flashing lights), sudden swelling of the face, hands or feet, upper-abdominal pain, or nausea and vomiting later in pregnancy.
Management
- Regular blood pressure and urine checks.
- Safe medication to control blood pressure.
- Low-dose aspirin and adequate calcium may lower risk in high-risk women.
- Close monitoring; sometimes earlier delivery is the safest treatment.
