Mild hand swelling (oedema) is common as your body holds extra fluid and blood volume rises. It is usually harmless. But sudden or severe swelling of the hands and face, especially with headache or vision changes, can signal pre-eclampsia and needs urgent review.
Why it happens
Pregnancy increases blood volume and fluid retention, and this fluid can pool in the hands, especially in warm weather or later in the day.
Easing it
- Move your fingers and avoid tight rings.
- Cool water and elevating your hands help.
- Stay hydrated and limit very salty foods.
Warning signs — pre-eclampsia
Seek care immediately if hand or facial swelling comes on suddenly with a headache, vision changes, or upper-belly pain.
