Very common late in pregnancy and usually harmlessEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Swollen feet and ankles are very common, especially in the third trimester and by the end of the day. Extra fluid, increased blood volume, and the growing uterus slowing blood return from your legs all contribute. It is usually harmless.
Why it happens
Your body holds more fluid and blood, and the uterus presses on the large veins returning blood from your legs, so fluid pools in the feet and ankles.
Reducing it
- Elevate your feet and avoid standing for long.
- Move regularly and wear comfortable shoes.
- Stay hydrated; rest on your left side.
- Try compression socks.
Warning signs
Seek care for sudden or severe swelling, one leg much more swollen/red/painful than the other (possible clot), or swelling with headache or vision changes (possible pre-eclampsia).
