Sudden calf cramps are common, often at nightEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Sudden calf cramps, often at night, are common in the second and third trimesters. The exact cause is not fully known, but circulation changes, the weight of the uterus on nerves and blood vessels, and mineral balance all play a part.
Why they happen
Cramps are linked to circulation changes, the uterus pressing on nerves and vessels, and calcium/magnesium balance. They strike most often at night.
Preventing and easing them
- Stretch your calves before bed and during a cramp (flex your foot up toward you).
- Stay hydrated and walk gently each day.
- Eat calcium- and magnesium-rich foods.
When to see a doctor
Seek care for persistent calf pain, redness, warmth or swelling in one leg — this needs to rule out a blood clot (DVT).
Frequently asked questions
How do I stop a cramp fast?
Straighten your leg and gently flex your foot upward, then massage the calf.
Do I need more calcium or magnesium?
A balanced diet usually suffices; ask your doctor before taking extra supplements.
When is leg pain serious?
One-sided calf pain with redness, warmth or swelling needs urgent review to exclude a clot.
