The heart begins to form and may start beating. The neural tube closes and basic structures for the brain, spinal cord and major organs are laid down.
Your body this week
Morning sickness, fatigue, tender breasts and frequent urination often begin as hormones climb. Mood swings are common and normal.

- Eat small, frequent meals to ease nausea
- Keep dry crackers by your bed
- Rest whenever you can

- Stay well hydrated
- Avoid raw or undercooked foods

When does the heart start beating?
Often around week 5–6, though it may only be visible on an early ultrasound.
Is nausea a good sign?
It's very common but not required — many healthy pregnancies have little nausea.
