Always check first — and never stop essential medicines aloneEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine in pregnancy — including over-the-counter and herbal ones. Some are safe (like paracetamol and certain antibiotics), while others, such as ibuprofen and some others, are avoided. Never stop an essential prescribed medicine without advice.
General principles
- Check first — even for OTC and herbal products.
- Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time.
- Avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin) unless prescribed, especially later in pregnancy.
- Do not stop essential medicines (for epilepsy, thyroid, mental health, etc.) without your doctor.
Tell every clinician you are pregnant
Whenever you are prescribed anything, remind the doctor or pharmacist that you are pregnant.
