Paracetamol first; avoid ibuprofen and aspirin unless prescribedEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Paracetamol is the first-choice painkiller in pregnancy. Avoid ibuprofen, aspirin and other NSAIDs unless your doctor prescribes them — they are generally not recommended, especially after around 20–30 weeks. Stronger painkillers should only be used under medical supervision.
Safe vs avoid
| Painkiller | In pregnancy |
|---|---|
| Paracetamol | First choice, lowest effective dose |
| Ibuprofen / NSAIDs | Avoid unless prescribed (esp. later) |
| Aspirin (pain doses) | Avoid unless prescribed |
| Opioids | Only under medical supervision |
Low-dose aspirin is different
Note: low-dose aspirin is sometimes prescribed to prevent pre-eclampsia — that is a specific medical use, different from taking aspirin for pain.
