Slower digestion from progesterone means more gasEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Extra gas and burping are normal — progesterone relaxes and slows your digestive tract, so food moves slower and more gas forms. It is harmless but can be uncomfortable.
Why it happens
Progesterone slows digestion, giving gut bacteria more time to produce gas. A growing uterus adds pressure on the intestines.
Reducing it
- Eat smaller meals slowly.
- Limit fizzy drinks and gas-forming foods (beans, cabbage, fried food).
- Get enough fibre and fluids.
- Stay gently active.
When to see a doctor
Get checked for severe abdominal pain, or constipation with vomiting.
Frequently asked questions
What foods cause the most gas?
Beans, lentils, cabbage, onions, fried foods and fizzy drinks are common triggers.
Is trapped wind pain normal?
Mild cramps from trapped wind are common; severe or persistent pain should be reviewed.
Can I take anything for it?
Ask your doctor before using anti-gas remedies; diet and movement usually help first.
