A tightening wave that builds, peaks and easesEvidence-based & doctor-reviewed
Contractions feel like a tightening or cramping wave that builds up, peaks and then eases — often described like strong period pains or a band tightening around your bump and back. Real labour contractions become regular, longer, stronger and closer together.
What they feel like
Many feel a hardening of the bump with a wave of pressure or cramp, sometimes radiating to the back. Between contractions, the muscle relaxes and the pain eases.
Braxton-Hicks vs true labour
| Braxton-Hicks | Labour contractions |
|---|---|
| Irregular, unpredictable | Regular, closer together |
| Ease with rest/movement | Continue and intensify |
| Usually not painful | Get stronger and longer |
