Labour happens in three stages: the cervix thinning and opening, the pushing and birth of your baby, and finally the delivery of the placenta. Your midwife or doctor supports and monitors you throughout.
The three stages
- First stage: contractions open the cervix to 10 cm (early/latent then active labour).
- Second stage: you push and your baby is born.
- Third stage: the placenta is delivered.
Pain relief and support
Options range from breathing and movement to water, TENS, gas and air, and epidural. Discuss your preferences in advance and keep your hospital bag ready.
