Amniocentesis is a diagnostic test, usually done from about 15 weeks. A thin needle takes a small sample of amniotic fluid to confirm chromosomal or genetic conditions. It is very accurate but carries a small risk of miscarriage, so it is offered when the benefits outweigh the risks.
When it is offered
Usually after a higher-risk screening result (NT, NIPT), a family history, or other findings — to give a definite diagnosis.
