The anomaly scan (also called the TIFFA or 20-week scan) is a detailed ultrasound done between 18 and 20 weeks. It checks your baby's organs, spine, heart, brain, limbs and growth, and looks at the placenta and amniotic fluid.
What it checks
- Brain, spine, heart and major organs
- Face, limbs and abdominal wall
- Growth, placenta position and fluid levels
Good to know
It can often (not always) reveal the baby's sex if you wish to know and it is permitted locally. Most scans are reassuring; if something needs a closer look, your doctor will explain the next steps.
