Your first ultrasound is usually a dating scan, done between about 6 and 14 weeks. It confirms your due date, checks that the pregnancy is developing and located correctly, and shows how many babies there are. An early scan (6–9 weeks) may be done if there is bleeding or uncertainty about dates.
What it checks
- Confirms the due date and how far along you are.
- Checks the heartbeat and that the pregnancy is in the uterus.
- Shows single or multiple babies.
Combined with NT screening
At 11–14 weeks, the dating scan may be combined with the NT scan for chromosomal screening.
