When your waters break, note the time, colour and smell of the fluid, put on a pad, and call your maternity unit for advice. Labour often follows soon, but not always — your team will tell you what to do next.

What to do

Go in urgently if

Seek care immediately if the fluid is green or brown (meconium), bloody, smells offensive, if you feel the cord, if your baby's movements reduce, or if you are preterm or group B strep positive.

Frequently asked questions

Will labour start right after my waters break?

Often within hours, but not always — your maternity unit will advise on timing.

What colour should the fluid be?

Clear or pale straw is normal; green, brown or bloody fluid needs urgent review.

Can I take a bath after my waters break?

Avoid baths and anything vaginal once your waters break; follow your unit's advice.
